It’s a Salmon Slam double wham as South West salmon chaser Stoney makes it two phase wins in a row!

Avid salmon fisher Peter ‘Stoney’ Stonehouse has claimed back-to-back Salmon Slam phases, winning the competition’s third stage from fellow mad-keen angler Nathan Woods.

Stoney, who also won the Slam’s second phase and was runner-up in the opening stage, posted a score of 3,545mm total length of his longest four salmon.

The effort eclipsed Nathan’s 3,510mm total and Josh Woods’ 3,250mm score.

With the biggest salmon measuring 90cm, his PB salmon, Stoney said most of his success had come while fishing along Boranup Beach.

But with great community spirit, Stoney is now bowing out of the comp to give other a crack at winning some awesome prizes.

“This season, I’ve caught 198 salmon since 2 March,” Stoney told Recfishwest.

“It’s great to win back-to-back phases, especially because the prizes are so good, but I’ll stop entering my catches now to give other salmon chasers the chance to win.

“I’ll be giving the latest set of prizes to my young fella Taj – he’s 14 and will be frothing.”

So, what’s the secret to Stoney’s salmon success?

“Just keep casting,” Stoney said. “Don’t give up and just keep fishing because persistence eventually pays off.”

Awesome prizes for an awesome comp

For winning the latest phase, Stoney has claimed a Shimano Saragosa 5000 reel and a Shimano Coltsniper 10ft rod.

He has also netted himself a $250 Penn Tackle pack, a $50 Early Bird Bait voucher and a $100 voucher to Midland 4WD Centre.

“A massive shout out to Penn Tackle, Midland 4WD Centre and Early Bird Bait for sponsoring these wonderful prizes,” Recfishwest Operations Officer Aaron Moses said.

“The fishing industry’s support for the Salmon Slam has truly made a good comp into an awesome one.

“With the warmer water temperatures this year on account of the La Niña weather event, it hasn’t been the greatest salmon run so far this year.

“Nevertheless, we’ve still had nearly 1,400 fishers sign up for the comp so far and with four phases to go there are still plenty more prizes to be won, so get out there and get casting for your chance to win.”

This photo of Jake Atkinson at Malimup claimed the third phase’s ‘Best Photo’!!

Passionate South West fisher Jake Atkinson and his brother Lachlan Atkinson ventured to Malimup Beach, west of Windy Harbour, and had a salmon session to remember.

Keeping it old school and using his trusty Alvey surf reel, this photo of Jake has been awarded the ‘Best Photo’ category honours for the Salmon Slam’s third phase.

“Congratulations, Jake – it’s a cracking photo which perfectly captures the joy of chasing the iconic sportfish along some of the world’s best beaches,” Aaron said.

“Keep an eye out for the postman, we will be sending Western 4WDriver magazine and Richter Lures packs your way.”

Mireia Font Parella snared random adult category, which includes a Halco Tackle pack, a $100 Anglers’ Fishing World voucher and a $50 Early Bird Bait voucher.

Kingston Wickenden has taken out the third phase’s junior random category, winning a $150 Whitey’s Tackle and Camping tackle pack and a $100 Dunsborough Outdoor Sportz voucher.
