Tuna already tuned in to Recfishwest’s new exclusive members’ lure – the Fish Catcher 3000!

Recfishwest’s latest membership lure started its journey from inside the creative mind of a ten-year-old, then travelled to the Halco lure production team before finding itself inside a tuna’s mouth in a matter of months!

When 10-year-old Flynn Abbott saw the Recfishwest stand at the 2023 Perth Boat Show back in September, he excitedly eyed off our ‘Design your own lure’ competition and got colouring for a crack at having his illustration whipped up into a real-life Halco lure.

The Mandurah local and keen fisher never imagined his design would be selected out of more than 60 entries from the next generation of fishers, with hundreds of his fancy lure creation dubbed the ‘Fish Catcher 3000’ brought into production exclusively for Recfishwest members!

As part of his winning design, Flynn was invited to Halco HQ in Fremantle along with his entire family for a private tour of the premises, before being presented with 10 of his brought-to-life lures to take home along with some great Halco merchandise.

To put the icing on the cake, it took less than 24 hours for Flynn’s dad Ryan Abbott – a fellow lover of fishing and Tackle World Miami employee – to test out the new lure and prove it’s the real deal after landing himself a southern bluefin tuna on the troll off Mandurah!

“Well, they certainly work – now we just have to find some bigger fish to test it out on!” said Ryan.

This southern bluefin tuna found the Fish Catcher 3000 too good to resist off the coast of Mandurah!

The lure competition, which Recfishwest has run in partnership with Halco since 2014, allows youngsters each year to use their creativity to design the ultimate lure targeting species such as tuna, Spanish mackerel, wahoo, dolphinfish, yellowtail kingfish, tailor, salmon, barramundi and many others.

GO INTO THE DRAW TO WIN ON ONE OF THESE FANTASTIC, EXCLUSIVE LURES BY BECOMING A RECFISHWEST MEMBER!

It’s seen an array of great membership lures designed over the years all boasting some fantastic designs and colours from young fishing fanatics, with many impressive catches as a result.

Flynn’s design was judged best for “Containing colour patterns that are simply irresistible to a wide range of target species West Aussie fishers love to catch.”

Congratulations Flynn, and a big Recfishwest thanks to all participants who entered this competition. It’s always rewarding watching young, creative minds at work for our membership lures and this long-running competition will return in 2024 to form the design of our 2025 membership lure!
