Fishing Safety Grants Program
Do you have a project, event or idea that could improve fishing safety in your local community?
The Recfishwest Fishing Safety Grants Program provides funding to incorporated fishing clubs, community groups and not-for-profit organisations to deliver practical initiatives that help make recreational fishing safer across Western Australia.
Previous grant recipients have delivered a diverse range of safety projects, including:
- Albany Senior High School – Upgraded the Marine & Maritime Fishing Club room to create a safer and more functional space for student fishers.
- Australian Underwater Federation (AUF) – Delivered safety measures for the 2026 Inter-Pacific Spearfishing Championships.
- Boating Industry Federation of Western Australia (BFWA) – Supported volunteers assisting with safety and event operations at the 2026 Inter-Pacific Spearfishing Championships.
- Mary Island Fishing Club (MIFC) – Expanded a Kimberley women’s fishing competition focused on safe boating skills and participation.
- WA Underwater Council (WAUC) – Supported volunteers assisting with logistics and event operations at the 2026 Inter-Pacific Spearfishing Championships.
- Reef Sisters – Delivered women’s freediving courses in Karratha to improve safety, confidence and participation.
Eligible organisations are encouraged to apply for funding to support projects that align with one or more of the program’s priority areas, these include but are not limited to:
- Publicity and engagement
- Safety equipment:
- Safety training
- innovation in the safety space
Organisations may submit multiple applications, provided each project is separate and they have the capacity to deliver them.
Prospective applicants are encouraged to discuss their proposal with Recfishwest before submitting an application.
Grants of up to $15,000 are available for individual projects, with preference generally given to applications seeking less than $5,000 to maximise the number of projects funded across Western Australia. All applications will be assessed and approved by the Recfishwest Board.
Applications for Round 2 of the Recfishwest Fishing Safety Grants Program close at midnight on 13th August 2026.
