From buzzing kids fishing clinics, club sessions on the all the latest issues, new jetty launches and scout camps – April has been a massive month for Recfishwest out and about in the fishing community.
In conjunction with our partners Healthway and Shimano, Recfishwest was proud to run another Mid-West Tour of kids fishing clinics, with hundreds of kids being given the opportunity to wet a line at Geraldton, Dongara, Leeman, Green Head, Jurien Bay, Cervantes and Lancelin.
Our 10 clinics saw an army of happy kids enjoying catching a wide range of species, with big herring, skippy, tailor, wrasse, tarwhine, whiting and even a lovely black snapper – you name it, the kids caught it and released it!
“We saw some impressive skippy and herring turning up off most of the jetties during this tour and the parents had just as much fun as the kids did, hopefully the fishing itch continues,” said Recfishwest’s fishing clinics coordinator Sedin Hasanovic.
Importantly, these clinics are helping kids build the skills and confidence to enjoy fishing long after the clinics end and make new friends. For many, this was their very first time with a rod and reel, and the smiles said it all.
Along with the Mid-West tour, we also ran metro fishing clinics off the AQWA jetty in Hillarys and Ammo Jetty in Woodman Point, with more kids experiencing the fun of fishing along with the health and wellbeing benefits.

Getting around the fishing clubs
The Recfishwest team has also been busy hearing the view of local fishers throughout the west coast region this month on a range of fishing issues, as well as providing them with an update on the demersal changes.
In the past week, our team has delivered sessions at several fishing clubs including Lancelin Angling and Aquatic Club, Fremantle Recreational Fishing Club and Fremantle Sailing Club.
Other presentations this month included Hillarys Yacht Club, Surf Casting Anglers Club of Western Australia, and the WA Undersea Club.
Recfishwest’s Senior Operations Officer Sam Russell said, “As the peak body for recreational fishing in WA, it’s crucial we have these conversations with local fishers so we can hear their thoughts or concerns. This kind of feedback helps shape our advocacy to decision makers.”
This was on top of our team members attending the launch of the new Mandurah fishing platform and the announcement by the Minister around a new fishing jetty for Quinns Rocks.

Scout and about
Recfishwest also paid a visit to OneCamp 2026 in the Swan Valley – run by Scouts WA – where hundreds of kids fine-tuned their casting skills by having a crack at our popular ‘Lob it in the gob’ casting wall game pictured above.
Every youngster that paid the Recfishwest stand a visit to have a chat about fishing walked away with our exclusive stickers and hats, with both Leyland Campbell and Mason McHutchison kept busy throughout the entire day.
“There wasn’t one moment across the whole day where there wasn’t a crowd of enthusiastic kids around our casting wall,” said Mason. “The kids really loved the casting challenge and kept coming back for more, so it’s nice knowing these youngsters are fueling the love of fishing in WA for generations to come.”
