Mandurah flexes its fishing appeal even further with new all-abilities fishing platform

In exciting news for land-based Mandurah fishers, the recently completed all-abilities fishing platform under the new Estuary Bypass Bridge is open for action!

Recfishwest was proud to participate in the launch of the new state-of-the-art platform over the weekend, alongside our partners Fishability, who played a key role in bringing this new fishing spot to fruition over the past few years.

More than a hundred fishers, including mums, dads, kids and seniors excitedly paid the platform a visit during the day of the launch, and it didn’t take long for blue swimmer crabs, whiting, herring and tarwhine to also start making an appearance.

Check out the action from this platform launch in the video below!

Fishability Board Member Michael Donnelly said this new platform benefits not just people with disabilities wanting to wet a line, but any locals or visitors wanting to fish the species-rich waters of the Peel-Harvey estuary.

“I might get in trouble for saying this, but I genuinely believe this platform makes Mandurah the best fishing town in all of Western Australia,” said Michael.

“This is exactly what fishers want when it comes to an all-abilities fishing platform and this provides ample room for anyone wanting to see why the fishing in Mandurah is so special.”

It’s been a busy week for Fishability, who also officially launched their program up in the Pilbara region this week to the benefit of fishers with disabilities, check out some of the action from their launch here.

Our push for better fishing access across WA

Recfishwest strongly believes every coastal town should have an easily accessible fishing platform or jetty so people of all abilities can enjoy the vast social, physical and wellbeing benefits they provide to the community.

“Platforms like this are the first place where kids will enjoy wetting a line and they are also the only place where people with ability issues will be able to still enjoy it, so it’s very important we see more of this across WA,” said Recfishwest Operations Manager Leyland Campbell.

“We applaud our partners Fishability, along with the City of Mandurah and the State Government for helping deliver another top fishing spot in an area that lives and breathes fishing.”
