“King waves kill sign not just a tourist attraction” – Chris Dixon encourages fishers to stay safe along the Quobba Coast

Recfishwest Fish and Survive ambassador and avid rock fisher Chris Dixon is encouraging all fishers to have fun but stay safe when fishing along the Quobba Coast.

Chris Dixon has caught many fantastic fish along the Quobba coast, but is accutely aware of the need to stay safe when fishing.

The popular fishing YouTuber has spent years fishing the popular stretch of coastline, landing everything from Spanish mackerel and spangled emperor to tuna and cobia.

And while he knows just how great the fishing can be, Chris also understands how quickly conditions can change, with large swells and lack of preparation placing fishers at serious risk.

“While it’s amazing fishing, this place can be dangerous, and there’s numerous plaques up and down the coast where people have tragically lost their lives fishing here,” Chris said, whose YouTube Channel Dixon’s Fishing regularly features him rock fishing around the State.

“The King Waves kill sign isn’t just a tourist attraction. It should be taken as a bit of a warning and remind people that this coastline is dangerous and has claimed lives in the past.”

Chris features in this video, sharing advice and raising awareness to help anglers stay safe when fishing from the rocks at Quobba, Gnaraloo, Steep Point, and other popular Gascoyne locations.

Some of Chris’s key safe fishing tips include:

  • Know the conditions – check swell size, period and direction
  • Wear a lifejacket – it can buy you time to figure out a plan if you do go in
  • Keep off the low ledges – tempting as it is especially when calm, it just takes one king wave to come through and you’ve got nowhere to go
  • Fish with a mate – having someone to raise the alarm, should you end up in the drink, will greatly increase your chance of survival

Recfishwest Operations Officer Levi De Boni said he wants everyone to enjoy the fantastic fishing on offer up and around Quobba, but everyone should come home safe from a day spent fishing.

“It’s important to be aware that, due to its remoteness, emergency assistance could be hours away – so it’s critical everyone is aware of the conditions and measures they can take to lessen the risks of rock fishing on this stretch of coastline,” Levi said.

Recfishwest is also working closely with the Quobba station owners and the local shire, promoting awareness of some of the dangers that fishing in the region entails through educational flyers and signs for visitors to the region.
