Recfishwest was sad to hear of the recent passing of Life Member Norman (Norm) Halse, a remarkable Western Australian whose leadership, integrity and lifelong commitment to sustainable resource management made an enduring difference to our community and to recreational fishing in this State.
Norm’s connection to Recfishwest ran deep. Serving as Recfishwest Chairman from 2001–2003, he guided the organisation through its formative years, helping to build the strong, independent, and credible voice for recreational fishers that Recfishwest is today and his balanced and thoughtful leadership laid the foundations that continues to shape our work more than two decades later.
Norm was honoured as a Recfishwest Life Member in 2017 and dedicated his service over the past 25 years as:
- Recfishwest Chair
- Recfishwest representative on the Cockburn Sound Management Council
- Director General of the Department of Agriculture
- EPA Board Member
- President of the WA Conservation Council
- Chairman of the National Parks and Nature Conservation Authority
- A member of the Board of the International Centre for Agricultural Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA)
“Norm remained a dedicated advocate for recreational fishers throughout his life and spent a huge portion of his life on the water. We weren’t surprised to hear he was pulling up cray pots well into his 90s,” said Recfishwest CEO Dr Andrew Rowland.
“He played such an immense role for fishing in WA and he will be dearly missed by Recfishwest, his family and friends. Rest in peace, Norm and thank you for everything you gave to WA’s recreational fishing community.”
