In a big win for land-based fishers, fishing access at the iconic Army Groyne on Rottnest/Wadjemup Island has been secured, following strong advocacy from Recfishwest and Boating WA.
The Rottnest Island Authority (RIA) had planned to redevelop the Army Groyne in South Thompson Bay into a barge operations facility with no public access.
Both Recfishwest and Boating WA provided submissions to the Environmental Protection Authority calling for access to the groyne to be retained and for all-abilities fishing platforms to be included as part of any development. In response to our submissions the RIA said the development will “incorporate opportunities for recreation fishing into the detailed design of the facility and aim to not diminish the current fishing access or amenity.”
The RIA also said, “Stage 2 of the development includes structures such as a small craft landing and ferry berth, and RIA will look to include design for all access recreational fishing.”
Recfishwest Operations Manager Leyland Campbell said, “We’re pleased RIA listened and recognised the importance of keeping this treasured fishing spot open. The Army Groyne has been part of WA’s fishing culture for generations.
“We’ll always fight to protect fishing access to places that deliver vital social, cultural, and well-being benefits for the WA fishing community.”
With this win secured, we can now look to ensure fishing values are respected in other government led developments including the new Fremantle Traffic Bridge – an iconic location with a proud fishing heritage that deserves the same commitment towards protecting fishing values. Watch this space!
