Fishability is calling on more West Aussies to volunteer their time and help make recreational fishing safer and more accessible for fishers with disabilities across the State.
Recfishwest is proud to partner with Fishability, which relies on dedicated volunteers to deliver safe, inclusive fishing experiences that build confidence and foster friendships.
Its inclusive program helps participants receive all the social and well-being benefits of fishing.
Whether you are an experienced angler or simply enjoy the outdoors, being a Fishability volunteer is a really rewarding way to help pay it forward.
No experience? No worries
Fishers of all ages, abilities, and levels of knowledge are welcome, with free training and skill-building opportunities included in the volunteer package on sign-up.
Volunteers typically donate two to three hours each month, helping at fishing sessions from Albany to Roebourne, with a particular need for volunteers in the Bunbury and Busselton regions.

For more than 20 years, Fishability has celebrated fishing with the help of like-minded volunteers, creating a safe and supportive experience on and off the water, with plenty of time to share stories and camaraderie.
Fishability lifetime member Ray Benneti said the volunteer opportunities provided through Fishability have allowed him to help those with disabilities experience the joy of fishing – something that some people may take for granted.
“My first experience in helping people with disabilities fishing was a real eye-opener, and I was amazed at the sheer enjoyment the participants got while fishing,” Ray said.
“I never returned from a fishing day spent with our participants, without feeling a great feeling of satisfaction.”
Volunteers show participants how to fish, helping out with gear and fishing instruction. Relationships are built, and bonds are forged, boosting participants’ self-esteem and interactions with the marine environment.
Fishability’s Unsung Hero award winner Rosalie Richardson said she treasured her time spent volunteering with Fishability, allowing her to give back to the community while enjoying the beautiful coastline and fresh air.
“Through Fishability, I’ve shared great experiences and had many good chats, met amazing people, and seriously improved my fishing knowledge,” Rosalie said.
“I’ve enjoyed being part of a wonderful team of like-minded volunteers and the satisfaction of knowing I’ve been part of creating lasting memories for participants.”
Recfishwest Operations Lead Matt Gillett – also a Fishability Board member – said volunteers were the driving force behind Fishability’s success and helping people of all abilities to enjoy fishing.
“Fishing has an incredible ability to bring people together, improve wellbeing and create lifelong memories, and everyone deserves the opportunity to experience that regardless of their ability,” Matt said.
