Salmon Slam 2021’s second phase goes to the wire as Woodsy and Stoney go salmon-for-salmon!

A defiant Peter ‘Stoney’ Stonehouse has made a last-ditch effort to pip reigning phase-winner Nathan Woods and claim the second phase of the 2021 Salmon Slam.

The two salmon-mad anglers have been going toe-to-toe and salmon to salmon over the past fortnight, with Stoney ultimately emerging as victor in a gripping contest to snare the latest open category.

Peter ‘Stoney’ Stonehouse has won the open category of the 2021 Salmon Slam’s second phase!

For the open category, Salmon Slam scores are determined by the total length of each fisher’s longest four salmon.

In the latest phase, Nathan – who took out the comp’s opening round open category – was approaching back-to-back phase victories after posting a total of 3,285mm.

With 24 hours remaining in the phase, Stoney had a 3,275mm four-fish total, but the determined angler rallied with a couple of solid salmon catches to improve his score to 3,335mm to claim the win.

Josh Woods finished third for the phase with 3,245mm.

For his efforts, Stoney has won a Shimano Saragosa 5000 reel, Shimano Coltsniper 10ft rod, $250 Penn Tackle pack, $50 Early Bird Bait voucher and $100 voucher to Midland 4WD Centre.

Recfishwest Operations Officer Aaron Moses thanked Shimano, Penn Tackle, Midland 4WD Centre and Early Bird Bait for donating the awesome prizes.

“And, a big shoutout to Stoney – whose biggest salmon measured 87cm – for taking out the Salmon Slam’s second phase,” Aaron said.

Say cheese, Justin!

Fishing near Thomas River, about 120km east of Esperance in the Cape Arid National Park, Justin Lumsden got among plenty of salmon – and now he’s also won Salmon Slam’s ‘Best Photo’ section.

The fantastic photo of Justin keeping the sand between his toes and fishing from pristine coastline in the State’s south, was unanimously selected by the competition judging panel.

“Fantastic fishing, Justin – we will be sending a Western 4WDriver magazine pack and a Richter Lures lure pack to you shortly,” Aaron said.

The random adult category – which includes a Halco Tackle pack, a $100 Anglers’ Fishing World voucher and a $50 Early Bird Bait voucher – was won by Doug Wescombe.

It came as the junior random category of the Salmon Slam’s second phase was snared by Nicole Pell.

As a result, Nicole will be receiving a $150 Whitey’s Tackle and Camping tackle pack and a $100 Dunsborough Outdoor Sportz voucher.

The winner of the second phase’s ‘Best Photo’ category, Justin Lumsden!
