Just 5mm between victory and second place in Salmon Slam’s sixth phase

An 82cm salmon has propelled Mitchell Daube to a narrow victory in the sixth phase of the Salmon Slam, winning the open category by a mere 5mm.

The South West fisher posted a score of 3,165mm, after his four longest salmon of the round measured 82cm, 79cm, 78.5cm and 77cm, to narrowly eclipse Hudson Hussie’s 3,160mm.

With sixth phases now complete, the Salmon Slam has now entered its seventh and final round before the three-month fishing comp comes to an end at midnight, 31 May.

That means there’s less than a fortnight left to catch a salmon for your chance to win the 3.5m Seajay dinghy, powered by a six-horse power, four-stroke Honda outboard and trailer top-prize.

By the smallest of margins

For taking out the sixth phase’s open category in a tight finish, Mitchell is now the proud owner of a Shimano Vanford 5000 reel and a 10ft Shimano Coltsniper rod.

He has also won a $250 Augusta X-treme Outdoor Sports voucher, a $50 Early Bird Bait voucher and a $100 voucher to Midland 4WD Centre.

Salmon were running hot at Malimup last weekend, with Mitch getting stuck into the southern sportfish!

Speaking with Recfishwest, Mitchell said the salmon were a product of an epic session at Malimup Beach last weekend.

“I would have caught about 20 or so salmon during the session, which was great fun on the light gear,” he said.

“I do a fair bit of fishing – I actually caught a pinkie from a beach south of Bunbury last night – but I do look forward to salmon each autumn.

“It’s great to have won these prizes, I can’t believe it, I’m stoked.”

Salmon snaps

During a gloomy Saturday afternoon at Yeagarup last Saturday, 15 May, Teagan Price had an awesome time catching salmon.

The photo below has made the session more worthwhile, with Teagan also winning the ‘Best Photo’ honours for the Salmon Slam’s sixth phase.

As a result, Teagan has claimed a Western 4WDriver magazine pack and a Richter Lures lure pack.

Yeagarup produced a couple of good salmon for Teagan Price last Saturday.

Who else won what?

Luke Pilkington has won the sixth phase’s random adult category, which includes a Halco Tackle pack, a $100 Anglers’ Fishing World apparel pack and a $50 Early Bird Bait voucher.

The junior random category was won by Hudson Hussie, who will receive a $150 Whitey’s Tackle and Camping tackle pack and a $100 Dunsborough Outdoor Sportz voucher in the post.

With the 2021 Salmon Slam approaching its 31 May conclusion, be sure to keep entering your salmon catches via the mobile app for your chance to win the many prizes still on offer.
