Fishing for votes: parties cast lines with jetty pledges

As the State Election heats up, all major parties are recognising the value of jetties and fishing platforms to local communities, making significant commitments to build and upgrade them.

Labor has pledged around $5 million so far to:

The Liberals, meanwhile, have pledged $12.5 million so far to:

Popular fishing spots such as South Mole (left), Emu Point in Albany (centre) and the Collie River Bridge (right) are some of the locations that have received pledges for fishing jetty upgrades from contesting political parties ahead of the State Election on March 8.

The WA Nationals have also expressed support to initiate comprehensive consultations with the view to upgrade and modernise our existing fishing jetties and platforms, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of our communities.

Recfishwest CEO Dr Andrew Rowland welcomed the growing political attention.

“Jetties are more than just fishing spots — they’re vital community assets. They create essential nearshore habitats, boost biodiversity, connect people to the coast and strengthen the social fabric of coastal towns.”

Recfishwest is calling on all parties to invest in building and restoring more jetties along WA’s coastline. “Jetties enrich lives and communities,” added Dr Rowland. “Every coastal town deserves a jetty and all parties can do more.”

While Recfishwest remains proudly independent and politically neutral, our mission is to secure commitments that benefit fishers. As the election nears, we’ll provide a comprehensive overview of all parties’ fishing-related pledges in our Broadcast e-newsletter.
