A little rain couldn’t dampen spirits at this year’s Troutfest, with around 300 mums, dads and kids turning out to Waroona’s picturesque Drakesbrook Weir to help release hundreds of healthy rainbow and brown trout.
Now in its ninth year, the popular event has become a much-loved South-West tradition celebrating WA’s freshwater fishing scene. More than 300 trout – reared at DPIRD’s Pemberton Hatchery and ranging from mid-sized yearlings to large ex-broodstock – were released by hand into their new home, generating plenty of smiles despite the wet weather. Supported by the Shire of Waroona, Alcoa, Daiwa and DPIRD, Troutfest also featured fly-fishing lessons from the Western Australian Trout and Freshwater Fishing Association, along with community stalls and food vendors.
An additional 65,000-plus trout will be stocked across South-West waterways over the coming months, providing more great opportunities for freshwater anglers to wet a line.

DPIRD has also responded positively to Recfishwest’s call to declare 4-12 October a freshwater ‘licence-free’ period, meaning families were encouraged to try their luck at lure casting or fly-fishing without needing to purchase a licence.
The licence-free period will entice many to explore trout and redfin perch fishing amidst scenic landscapes, contributing to the $37 million economic benefit generated annually by freshwater fishers.
Recfishwest Operations Lead Matt Gillett, who has attended every Troutfest, said it was inspiring to see families getting involved.
“Troutfest really shows how important fish stocking is to underpinning our South-West freshwater fishery,” said Matt. “When kids and parents can help release these beautiful fish, they feel connected to the waterways and the future of fishing.”
