It doesn’t get much better for a West Aussie youngster than catching awesome Gascoyne species and following it up with a game of beach cricket!
Recfishwest recently held another successful kids fishing clinic in Exmouth marina for the northern Clontarf academies, with some stellar species caught and released.
Eighty young participants enjoyed the rich diversity of fish species on offer, including coral trout, bonito, tuskfish and stripey seaperch, providing the boys with a heap of fun.

The event was organized in partnership with the Clontarf academies from Carnarvon, Karratha, Port Hedland, and Newman, with generous support from Woodside North West.
Guided by Recfishwest’s Clinic Coordinators Sedin Hasanovic and Mason McHutchison, the clinic focused on teaching young fishers how to improve their fishing and fish handling skills along with how to show good stewardship towards the environment.
“This fishing clinic each year aligns perfectly with Clontarf’s annual beach cricket carnival, so it is a pleasure to combine the kids’ love of fishing and cricket while offering these enthusiastic anglers from the Gascoyne and Pilbara regions a chance at landing some impressive species,” said Sedin.
Rob Clements, WA Northwest Regional Manager of the Clontarf Foundation, said the boys are always very excited for these fishing clinics.
“Opportunities like this are incredibly valuable for our boys’ wellbeing and personal development. Fishing and beach cricket are familiar passions for many of them, and engaging in activities they genuinely enjoy helps build confidence, strengthen connections, and reinforce key life skills such as teamwork, respect for the environment, and resilience,” said Rob.
“Experiences like the Exmouth fishing clinic create positive memories, expose the boys to new environments, and support their social and emotional growth, outcomes that sit at the heart of Clontarf’s work. We thank Recfishwest for their continued support in making these opportunities possible.”
Mason McHutchison, Recfishwest’s Community Engagement Officer, was very impressed with the knowledge, skills and respect shown by the Clontarf kids during his first Exmouth clinic.
“The kids really love fishing and come from regional areas where it plays a crucial role in their social lives, and their understanding of the environment was as impressive as the variety of species they caught.
