Ready, set, GO! Abalone season on the horizon

Are you ready for this year’s West Coast abalone season? Four hours over four days is the permitted time frame for this year’s season, so gear up and plan ahead to make it count!

With the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development announcing changes to the season last year to improve fisher safety and assist stock sustainability, licence holders are able to fish for abalone later in the season making it more enjoyable, providing a higher chance of better catches and most importantly, returning home safe.

The dates for this year’s season are:

  • Saturday, 8 December 2018 – 7am – 8am;
  • Saturday, 12 January 2019 – 7am – 8am;
  • Saturday, 2 February 2019 – 7am – 8am; and
  • Saturday, 16 February 2019 – 7am – 8am.

As with all fishing experiences, there’s no point if you don’t live to tell the tale, and even though the risk of poor weather conditions has minimised safety concerns, there’s always a risk of harm if people aren’t prepared in advance.

That’s why Recfishwest have teamed up with Surf Life Saving WA to provide a ‘need to know’ abalone fishing webpage where you’ll learn what equipment you’ll need to catch abalone and where!

Check it out here.
