Hungry Herring at the 15th Anniversary of Recfishwest SunSmart Fishing Clinics in Bremer Bay

The perfect fishing weather greeted for the 15th annual Recfishwest SunSmart Fishing Clinics held in conjunction with the Bremer Bay Community Resource Centre (CRC) at Fishery Beach on Monday 8th January 2018.

We ran two 2hr clinics, one at 9:30am and a 1pm clinic, both starting at Fishery Beach Community Hall and then fishing from the marina jetty.

Below our jetty fishing spot swam stingrays, lots of small Swallowtail, King George Whiting, Bullseyes, monster Herring and some big but wily Buff Bream which didn’t eat anyone’s hook!

There were a few nice skippy hooked and landed, as well as two King George, but the hungriest fish of the day were the very lively fat Herring. The Herring caught lived up to first-time fisher Tahlia expectations of ‘jiggly-ness’.

“For more than a third of our participants, it was the first fish they had ever caught.”

Herring has long been touted as ‘the people’s fish’ and with larger than normal specimens smashing the kids’ bait, it was easy to see why Herring is loved by so many families around WA.

Every participant received a hat, a back sack and a certificate of participation for the 15th anniversary. Among our Recfishwest SunSmart clinic participants were two young brothers from Perth, both keen to take Mum and Dad out on the jetty again straight after the clinic – and catch more of those Herring!

The families all thoroughly enjoyed themselves and a number of parents mentioned how much they learnt from the clinics showing we’re never too old to learn more about fishing.

One mother said, “I don’t have a lot of fishing experience, but coming along to the clinics with my children really helped my confidence. I think I’ll be taking them out on a jetty or beach near home.”

Another parent commented on how much she learned from the information talk, “Now I know how to be prepared if we want to keep the fish we catch next time we take the kids fishing.”

“I think I’ll be taking them out on a jetty or beach near home.”

Without the enormous effort put in by the Bremer Bay CRC group, community volunteers and Recfishwest staff and volunteers, as well as funding from our sponsor Healthway, this event would not be possible.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this event so much fun and we look forward to year number 16 at Bremer Bay.
