Have your say on the important South West trout fishery’s future

Exploring skinny streams in thick bushland while fly-fishing or casting your favourite minnow at a dam surrounded by idyllic Karri trees — the South West trout fishery is truly unique.

However, as many freshwater fishers know, environmental changes — including annual declining rainfall in WA’s south — pose a risk to the freshwater fishery.

That’s why Recfishwest is calling freshwater anglers to complete a quick 10-minute survey to play their part in shaping the trout fishery’s future.

“We’re collecting information on current freshwater fishing activities and determining what trout enthusiasts want from the South West fishery,” Recfishwest Operations Officer Aaron Moses said.

“The survey will take less than 10 minutes to complete, but your responses will be valuable in helping to determine future stocking locations so the fishery can continue to improve.”

Recfishwest Trout Monitoring – app-solutely

Aaron also encouraged trout anglers to download the easy-to-use Recfishwest Trout Monitoring mobile app for free from the Apple Store or the Google Play store.

Have your downloaded the Recfishwest Trout Monitoring app yet?

The app allows anglers to log their trout catches, in turn providing critical information to inform future fish stocking programs in the South West.

“The data collected through the app will help protect the freshwater fishery from potential environmental threats,” Aaron said.

“Better informed future trout stocking strategies and programs in the region will be important in stocking fish in the most ideal areas.

“The app promotes a citizen science drive by anglers who are passionate about the freshwater fishery and care about achieving better outcomes for the future of the State’s freshwater fishing.”
