Great new school holiday fishing program to catch trout in the ‘burbs

UPDATE: The three-day Fish in the ‘Burbs event is fully booked.

Imagine catching rainbow trout in the middle of suburbia, only metres from your front door!

For those who live in Austin Lakes Estate, South Yunderup, they don’t have to imagine – it is about to become a reality.

From 26 – 28 September, Recfishwest – in partnership with the Shire of Murray, Indo-Pacific Environmental and Aquatic Life Industries – will hold its inaugural ‘Fish in the ‘Burbs’ providing a new family-friendly and safe fishing experience.

The momentous suburban trout stocking program is set to be a WA-first, with young fishers fishing for ripper rainbows a stone’s throw from many of their homes. Fish in the ‘Burbs is backed by the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund.

More than 500 rainbow trout will be released into the lake in the centre of Austin Lake Estate to introduce the next generation of freshwater fishers to fishing.

Also, because it is being held on private property, freshwater fishing licences aren’t required to get stuck into the fun.

“Recfishwest has been working hard to make a school holidays urban stocking program possible,” Recfishwest CEO Dr Andrew Rowland said.

“So, it is really exciting that we are on the verge of it happening as this will be the first of many more similar events to come.”

Not sure how to fish for trout?

Don’t know how to tie a knot? Fear not, the Recfishwest experts will be there to help you land that big rainbow trout you’re aiming to catch.

Young fishers, even those who aren’t overly experienced, will be able to enjoy some exciting fishing – no prior fishing knowledge is required to have an awesome time at Fish in the ‘Burbs.

You can bring your own fishing gear or borrow one of our rod-and-reels if you don’t have one – although there is a limited amount of loan gear available.

If bringing your own gear, a small rod rated in the 1kg to 5kg range – suitable for bream or whiting – will suit perfectly.

A new family-friendly and fun fishing experience

Six three-hour sessions will be held across the three-day freshwater fishing bonanza, with 50 fishers – plus two parents or guardians – able to attend each morning and afternoon session.

Fishers will be able to register for either a morning session from 9am to 12pm or an afternoon session from 1pm to 4pm.
