Adopt a fishing line bin – volunteers wanted

The Reel It In fishing project was launched in 2013 to provide bins for fishing line and gear disposal at popular fishing spots along the Swan-Canning river system.

Emptied regularly by volunteers, each of the Reel It In bins play an important role in reducing fishing-related waste from littering our river systems and shorelines, safeguarding recfishers’ reputation as aquatic environmental custodians.

Since the Reel It In project was launched in 2013 by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (then the Swan River Trust), more than 83km of fishing line has been disposed at the various bins.

This year has seen the scheme expanded to include new bins at popular metro beaches, along the Swan and Canning rivers and along the south coast.

With new bins installed at Rockingham, Joondalup and Wanneroo, Recfishwest and DBCA are looking for volunteers to help empty the disposed line, hooks, plastic bait bags and general rubbish.

The locations up for adoption include:

Rockingham

  • Port Kennedy Boat Ramp (Port Kennedy)
  • Bent Street Boat Ramp (Shoalwater)
  • Mersey Point Jetty (Shoalwater)

City of Joondalup

  • Ocean Reef Boat Harbour
  • Burns Beach
  • Marmion Foreshore

City of Wanneroo

  • End of Alexandra View (Mindarie)
  • One each of the three groynes running parallel with Ocean Drive (Quinns Rocks)

While the campaign’s positive results on our fisheries is evident, Recfishwest and DBCA needs help to empty these bins.

If you want to adopt a bin, empty it when it gets full and dispose its contents sustainably, please contact the department at community@dbca.wa.gov.au to get involved.

More than 83km of fishing line has been disposed at the various bins since 2013.
