The Striped Mauler ready to stir up some salmon

Eight-year-old Abigail Meyza never imagined she would be designing a limited edition Halco 120 lure for thousands of fishers across WA, but this is exactly what she achieved after entering our 2019 Recfishwest ‘design your own lure’ competition.

The lure competition, which we have been running in partnership with Halco Tackle since 2014 saw more than 50 next generation fishers pick up the coloured pencils and take to the paper at our stall at the 2019 Perth International Boat Show.

Using their creativity to design the ultimate lure to catch species such as tailor, salmon, barramundi, Spanish mackerel and mangrove jacks, Halco lure specialists were blown away by the youngsters’ designs which underwent a competitive assessment process to choose the winning design.

The winning lure design was judged to be “unique, well thought-out and highly attractive to a range of target species.”

Abigail Meyza receives her winning certificate and lures from Halco Managing Director Ben Patrick and Recfishwest CEO Andrew Rowland.

With the results in, Abigail’s family was contacted and she could not hide her excitement whooping for joy all the way home from school in the family car.

As part of the prize for her winning design, Abigail headed down to Halco HQ in Fremantle for a private tour of the factory with lure experts. Abigail was able to see her lure design come to life and be put to the test before being presented with 10 of her own lures to take home – we reckon Abigail is about to get mighty popular among her fishing friends!

Congratulations, Abi, and thank you to all participants who entered the competition. As ever, it was great to see the next generation of fishers getting their creative brains working and we look forward to the comp to design next year’s Recfishwest lure.
