Salmon Slam 2021’s first phase winners enjoy spoils of fun-filled fishing!

Passionate fisher Nathan Woods has claimed a suite of awesome fishing prizes, after taking out the Salmon Slam’s first phase open category.

Having gone neck and neck with second-placed Tyson Groom for a couple of days, Nathan’s four longest salmon entered into the 2021 Salmon Slam, WA’s biggest land-based fishing competition, measured 3160mm to narrowly edge out Tyson’s 3130mm effort.

Congratulations, Nathan!

The fly-in, fly-out worker and Manypeaks resident said he made the most of his recent week off to go fishing for salmon most days near Cheynes Beach during the Awesome Autumn of Salmon.

“Most of the fish I caught and entered in the comp came from Mermaid Beach, near Cheynes,” Nathan said.

“I’ve just been walking the beach, casting lures along the edge of the reef, waiting for schools to come through — it has been great fun.”

Nathan can usually be found in his 4.6m centre-console chasing demersals in the Great Southern.

However, he said the region’s early season salmon action had been scintillating so he’d been keeping the sand between his toes and hooking into the iconic southern sportfish.

“This is one of my favourite times of year — especially when the salmon are about like they currently are,” Nathan said.

“I’ve probably caught 60 or 70 salmon so far this season — it’s been awesome.”

Lachlan’s first salmon a fish to remember

Four-year-old Lachlan Woods’ won’t forget his first salmon any time soon, especially because he’s just won the ‘Best Photo’ category for the first phase of this year’s Salmon Slam.

Fishing at Fosters Beach, near Bremer Bay, Lachlan’s sheer determination helped the next-generation fisher reel the salmon in without too much help from his father Josh Woods.

“It was a great day’s fishing — we caught about 10 salmon all up,” proud mother Julia Fenny, who took the winning photo, said.

“Lachlan didn’t need too much help to land the salmon at all, he was pretty good at getting it in quickly.”

Well done, Lachlan! A Western 4WDriver magazine pack and a Richter Lures lure pack will be sent your way!

Tyson Groom claimed the random adult category, following his close second to Nathan in the open section, winning a Halco Tackle pack, a $100 Anglers’ Fishing World voucher and a $50 Early Bird Bait voucher.

The opening phase’s junior random category was taken out by Clancy Banfield, who wins a $150 Whitey’s Tackle and Camping tackle pack and a $100 Dunsborough Outdoor Sportz voucher.
