Join the fishing fun and catch a trout at Fish in the ‘Burbs

Do you want to catch a rainbow trout in the local park at a fun, family-friendly event?

If so, be sure to take part in an organised fishing clinic at the anticipated second edition of our trailblazing suburban fish stocking program – Fish in the ‘Burbs.

WATCH: See what happened at last year’s Fish in the ‘Burbs!

The FREE two-day community fishing event and fishing clinics will be held at Austin Lakes Estate, South Yunderup, from 23 – 24 October.

Recfishwest is excited to host Fish in the ‘Burbs, in partnership with the Shire of Murray, to offer a fun, family-friendly fishing experience.

“Everyone should have the opportunity to try and catch a fish, especially in a safe setting, without necessarily having to venture along roads less travelled,” Recfishwest Operations Officer Sam Russell said.

“Fish in the ‘Burbs does exactly that and brings the trout to an easily accessible location – literally metres from the front doors of some lucky fishers who live in South Yunderup.”

The future of suburban trout stocking

The rainbow trout set to be released into the lake in the centre of Austin Lakes Estate are bred at the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development’s (DPIRD) Pemberton-based hatchery.

DPIRD also assessed the location as low-risk and approved the trout release, as required for the stocking of any fish into water courses or lakes.

Sam said fishing clinics held by the Recfishwest team across the two days at Fish in the ‘Burbs would introduce the next generation of fishers to freshwater angling.

“Bring the kids down and learn the basics of fishing while trying to catch a rainbow trout,” Sam said.

“There will also be opportunities to learn about recreational fishing rules, licences and biosecurity matters.

Fish in the ‘Burbs is a great event for the whole family to enjoy.

“Fish in the ‘Burbs is allowing us to gauge demand among the WA fishers for fishing events, like this one, in the heart of suburban and urban communities.

“Given the success of the inaugural Fish in the ‘Burbs and the anticipation for this upcoming event, we’re excited to see how this program could be developed.”

Freshwater fishing licences aren’t required to fish at the event, because Austin Lakes Estate is private property.

However, DPIRD have noted participants would need a copy of their registration when leaving Austin Lake in case of compliance checks.

Sedin Hasanovic, of Recfishwest, caught this rainbow trout at the inaugural Fish in the ‘Burbs.
