Have you Caught up on our Director Election Results?

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) for Recfishwest was held at 6:30pm on Tuesday 30th October, 2018.

The Chairman Tim Bray introduced Mrs Heather Brayford, Deputy Director General, Sustainability and Biosecurity, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and invited her to say a few words.

Heather addressed the attendants at the AGM and discussed issues, challenges and opportunities in the recreational fishing sector.

She reinforced the Departments commitment to maintaining and enhancing recreational fishing under the new Aquatic Resources Management Act including:

  • Artificial reefs
  • Fish stocking
  • Shark depredation

The AGM also included Director elections.

For the first time Recfishwest members were able to vote for their preferred candidate online and this resulted in the highest number of votes for any Director Election in Recfishwest’s history.

We would like to congratulate Dean Thorburn and Simon McLernon who were re-elected for another 2 year term to continue their work to drive Recfishwest in the right direction. Check out their credentials below:

Dean Thorburn

Dean is a biologist with over 15 years professional experience conducting marine and aquatic studies and specialises in fish biology and ecology. Dean is the Director and Principal Scientist of an environmental consulting company and has occupied that role since 2006. In this current role, Dean continues to work on the biology of numerous bony and cartilaginous fish species and conducts environmental monitoring programs, impact assessments and aids with government approvals for various projects throughout northern Australia and south-east Asia. Dean is also a member of the Bluewater Freedivers of Western Australia.

Simon McLernon

Simon brings a wealth of external experience from his work as an engineer from a variety of different industries over the past decade including ship building and subsea engineering. Simon currently works as a subsea engineer at BHGE. Over 3 years Simon has been volunteering his engineering skills in designing and manufacturing the Bluewater Safety Float which is designed to help increase safety for divers and other boat users. Being an avid diver and fisher throughout his life, Simon has a strong interest in marine life behaviour and the sustainability of WA fisheries. Simon was the events coordinator for Bluewater Freedivers of Western Australia for 3 years and the VP for 2 years.

We’re extremely proud to represent the interests of the WA fishing community and our purpose has never been stronger.  Over the past year, Recfishwest have been working towards reshaping a fishing frontier for WA through cutting edge innovation, habitat protection and enhancement and creating greater fish abundances in important fisheries across our state.
