This year’s Recfishwest Young Future Leaders (YFL) program is well and truly underway with participants working on fishing industry projects to benefit the WA community. The YFL program identifies future leaders in the recreational fishing community and this year’s instalment saw more than a dozen young fishers who are passionate about the marine environment and the potential opportunities available in the industry to grow their careers.
As a group they undertook training in fisheries management, communication, negotiation and leadership, including a workshop at the Abrolhos Islands and another in Perth. The program joins the dots between a wide selection of backgrounds in the fishing industry and offers participants the opportunity to develop broader skills in relation to their recreational fishing. They will have the ongoing opportunity to provide input on initiatives to improve recreational fishing for the community, educate the next generation of recreational fishers and support Recfishwest at public events. This in turn helps improve the experience and perception of recreational fishing among the wider WA community.
The participants learnt that the key to managing fish is to manage people more effectively and devised a strategy to promote the value of fishing through better education, research and effective dissemination of information to the wider community.
The next intake for the YFL program is expected to be in early 2018.
