The reason you can freely fish now is that there is no law that stops you doing so. There is a new law currently before parliament that will, for the first time, provide recreational fishers with a legal ‘right to fish’.
Recreational fishers, under current legislation, have no right to any allocations of fish stocks and are at the mercy of fisheries managers and political decision makers.
The new Aquatic Resources Management Bill 2015 (ARMB) will improve the recreational fishing communities ability to access fish resources and will lead to better managed fisheries with more flexible and adaptive management arrangements. The ARMB will also take the ‘politics’ out of fisheries management.
