THE Australian Junior Billfish Tournament was held in Exmouth last month and went off without a hitch, which was a relief to all involved after the popular Game Fishing Tournament Gamex was cancelled earlier in the year due to Cyclone Olwyn.
The weekend turned on some great weather after an average start, with 19 anglers and nine teams competing in the event run by the Exmouth Game Fishing Club.
Anglers came from as far away as Queensland and Victoria to fish in the tag and release event.
Overall, there were 14 black marlin and one sailfish tagged by the juniors.
Most pleasing was the fact that six juniors tagged their first-ever billfish! They were Chloe Shultze, Sophie Niikkula (aged just 7), Jesse Sutton, Sam Ahern, and brothers Will and Tom Rintoul (both small fry anglers). The parents were probably more excited than the kids during this event at times.
The EGFC expect the event to grow each year as Exmouth offers such great game fishing so close to shore, which is perfect for youngsters.
The Champion Team Junior was Azura, from French Maid.
Champion Team Small Fry was Trophy from Grandslam and Tackleworld.
The Champion Team Mixed was On Strike II from Nail It and Pussee Galore.
The AJBT was sponsored by Home Hardware, Turbine Services Australia and Woodside.
