The annual Kalbarri Sports Fishing Classic was run and won last month. It was another very successful event, with some great fish caught and plenty of good prizes supplied by the Kalbarri Motor Hotel, Seasport Charters, Getaway Outdoors and Max Marine, to name but a few of the sponsors. There were 43 boats in action, along with 30 river anglers and 40 prize categories on offer. Overall there were 147 anglers, including a record 15 juniors.
In fact, it was a big event for junior anglers, with Western Angler Next Gen team members Harry Waite and Robbie Leck winning the highest point scoring gamefish and river section, respectively. Harry landed a spanish mackerel just under 10 kilos on 3kg line, while Robbie caught a personal best 12kg mulloway.
They were just a couple of the winners and as always, the social side of the event was very enjoyable for all involved, and shows the value fishing events to regional communities. The pelagics were a bit quiet in the competition, but a few nice fish were caught, including some nice mackerel, and there were some quality demersals weighed in with some Dhufish of size being weighed in.
The presentation dinner was a sit-down dinner and also included a video presentation, while a Primus fridge-freezer was given out as a door prize and it was another junior winner in Beau Ralph.
There were around 150 fishers in this year’s event demonstrating once again the important contribution the Kalbarri Offshore and Angling Club provides to the Kalbarri community.
The Kalbarri Classic will be held again in early 2017.
