Recfishwest recently teamed up with Geraldton and Districts Offshore Fishing Club (GDOFC) to put on the Geraldton Fisherkid Community Classic. 50 kids aged three to 15 years braved the cold Geraldton morning and were rewarded with some excellent catches.
The inevitable Blowfish made its presence felt, keeping the young’uns entertained, while the more experienced fisherkids managed to catch other species such as Pink Snapper, Bream, Butterfish, Trumpeter, Whiting and Flat Head. The fish of the day belonged to Jimmy Lien catching a 36cm Bream landing him the top prize.
Other prize winners included Koby McDonald, Griffin Patience, Shaye Perry, Tyler Emery and Natasha Cosey who took out the honours in the ‘most unusual capture’ category having reeled in a pair of denim shorts! The top 6 winners received a fishing rod each from Getaway Outdoors Geraldton while all other participants walked away with some great prize packs from Recfishwest and GDOFC.
The catch and release competition delivered messages around safe, sustainable and enjoyable fishing. Both GDOFC and Recfishwest were pleased with the turnout and the support from local families was encouraging. This free community event was made possible through funding from recreational fishing licence money.
If you are looking for a fun day out in the next July School holidays for your children please come down and be a part of the 2016 Geraldton Fisherkid Community Classic. It is an enjoyable experience for the whole family and a chance for your kids to learn some tips that will hopefully contribute to a sustainable future in recreational fishing.
See you next year!
