MEDIA RELEASE September 1 2015
The South West freshwater fishing season is now open, with fishers set to flock to our freshwater waterways to fish for elusive trout that have been stocked in key locations to provide enhanced fishing experiences.
Recfishwest Chief Executive Officer Dr Andrew Rowland said late winter rains will provide local rivers and dams with ideal habitat for trout, while fishers get the opportunity to take in the surrounds of the South West forests.
“Trout are bred at the Pemberton Trout Hatchery and stocked at key locations each year, with this year seeing over half a million trout stocked into dozens of South West waterways over winter so fish stocks will be high when the season opens “ Dr Rowland said.
Recfishwest through their Freshwater Fisheries Reference Group, offers advice to the Department of Fisheries on trout stocking locations and this year key locations include the Warren River, Collie Gorge, Donnelly River, Blackwood River, Lefroy Brook and the Murray River.
The big ex broodstock fish can be found at Harvey, Big Brook and Drakesbrook Dams. For more information on 2015 stocking locations click here.
The freshwater season opens on 1 September 2015 and runs until 30 June 2016.
